With the Holiday Season in full swing the Gourmet Team has been busy collecting food, donating money for toys and doing what we can for The Christmas Cheer Board’s “Feed-a-Family” program; which involved making and delivering a hamper to a family-in-need.
I had the chance to speak directly with our Family, a single mother with three little girls. We chatted about her life, their struggles and each of the children then told me what they would like for Christmas. This past week, myself and two other members of the Gourmet Team packed everything up and delivered the hamper. It was apparent that our family was a family very much in need. Despite the fact that they didn’t have a lot, we were welcomed into their home by an appreciative mother, smiling children and bombarded with multiple hugs, thank-you’s and Merry Christmas’s.
To those of you who have mixed emotions or who are skeptical in donating for many reasons, I can say that this was truly a rewarding experience and meeting our Family shed some light on what most, myself included, take for granted not only at Christmas but year-round like food, winter boots, furniture and yes… even that frustrated feeling you get while having to wait in line or fight for parking at IKEA!
Your decision to help out shouldn’t be based on whether you feel someone is deserving or not but rather that you can. That you have a comfortable enough life; spending an hour of your time volunteering or as little as $2 on some stove top stuffing won’t put you out. I’m not promising all experiences we be as positively enlightening as mine but you won’t get that chance unless you try
So from all of us at Gourmet we would like send a big THANK-YOU to The Christmas Cheer Board and all the volunteers who make this possible. With Christmas only 5 days away take a moment to reflect on what is a “need”, a “want” and a “what I could do without” and spread some Christmas Cheer!!!
